Gen-Z Brides Aren't Buying Dresses.....

Sep 10, 2026

I hear bridal shop owners saying all the time about how "retail is dying...." but we don't subscribe to that belief around BOSS.

I've run a bridal shop for almost twenty years, and I still hear some version of that line every few months. Retail is dying. Storefronts are dying. Nobody wants to shop in person anymore.

Something I read this week from a member of the Forbes Communications Council put words to why I've stopped believing it. Anastasia Shtompel, wrote that a purchase works like an identifier for Gen-Z consumers, a public signal of who they are and what they value, more than a straightforward product decision.

That's not a theory to me. It's what I'm watching happen with our Gen-Z brides at Something New, appointment after appointment.

Beautiful gowns used to be the differentiator. Now they're simply the entry fee. Every serious shop a bride is considering already has them. What she's actually deciding, often before she ever picks up the phone, is whether your shop feels like her.

She's picking a dress, but really she's picking the group of women she wants to be associated with for the next year of her life.

That means the shop that wins her most often is the one that told the clearest story about who she'd get to be as part of it, not necessarily the one with the best inventory.

I think about this well beyond bridal. Any owner running a business right now, in any category, is competing on the same terms. The product used to be the pitch. Now the product is assumed, and the story around it is the pitch. Your social presence, your website, the way your team talks to a customer, the events you host, all of it either tells one consistent story or it tells five different ones. And customers, especially younger ones, can feel the difference immediately.

Inside BOSS, I coach owners doing $600K to $4.5M in bridal retail, and the ones pulling ahead right now are the ones who got serious about telling one story everywhere a bride encounters them, not necessarily the ones with the biggest stores. By the time she walks in the door, she already knows she belongs.

Winning the sale is no longer just about having the best gowns in your store - it’s about who can tell their stories online the best. Who can create a whole world for their brides to be a part of once they decide to participate with your shop?

➡️ How well are you telling your story online?
➡️ How clearly are you showing brides what they get to be a part of when they come into your store?
➡️ What kind of “bride” are you showing them THEY are whenever they decide to buy at your shop.

Your social media posts, voice, website, emails, influencers, events, etc. all need to show them one cohesive message so that your ideal client KNOWS they belong with you.

This is the exact conversation my team and I have with owners inside BOSS every week. If you're feeling this shift in your own business and want to talk through what it means for your marketing, let's get on a call.
